Accommodations in the Upper, Middle and Lower Florida Keys

Fine accommodations at a wide range of rates can be found from Key Largo all the way into the Lower Keys. While It was once true that the traveler looking for economy rates could find them in the Middle Keys, the re-development   strategies of the past few years have changed this. Approximately 2700 rooms at the low end of the price spectrum were taken offline in preparation for re-development into higher priced condo units. Constuction stalled because of the downturn in the real estate market, but the damage was done. Once affordable hotels and motels have raised their rates to take advantage of the lack of supply, and can no longer be considered economy or even moderate accommodations.  

We would recommend the following:

Located on five lush acres on the bay side of Islamorada (eye-la-more-ah-dah) is the Coral Bay Resort. Heated pool. Sandy beach leading to a swimmable tidal pool. Dockage. Spacious and immaculate cottages with brand new interiors and covered porches, decorated in rich Caribbean style. Standard rooms with small fridge and coffee maker, efficiencies, one and two bedroom apartments and two bedroom/two bath suites. Ideal for romantic couples. Families welcome.

On your left as you approach Marathon from Miami is the newly renovated Holiday Inn Resort and Marina, located on a saltwater lagoon with access out to open ocean. The Spottswood Company, current owners, spent over $3,000,000 to restore the property after Hurricane George. They are currently planning another major renovation to ensure the property remains a great place to stay in the Middle Keys.

Further into Marathon, near the center of the city, is the newly renovated, Sea Dell Motel.

A note about Hawk's Cay Resort and Marina. Located on exclusive Duck Key in the Middle Keys, Hawk's Cay Resort and Marine is a 60 acre private island with 160 spacious guest rooms and 16 suites, a pool, a salt water swimming lagoon, clay and hard tennis courts, two restaurants, and a number of villa units that are privately owned but rented by the resort. After more than 20 years of continuous ownership, the resort has now changed hands, is undergoing total redevelopment, and will reopen in December of 2008 as an upscale "flag" resort. The villas remain available for rent, but those closest to the construction are obviously not desirable, and the future of the relationship between the new resort ownership and the villa owners is somewhat uncertain.
